Dominican Republic & Riu Bachata

Last year was a visit to Cuba and this year I decided to try the Dominican Republic. The thought of spending two full weeks at an all-inclusive resort in the sun during a cold Canadian winter is too enticing and I went for it, booking a stay at the Riu Bachata. The Riu Bachata is located in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, set among small green hills and the Caribbean Sea.

There was a nice variety of food at the main buffet and the theme changed every day so it was easy to always have something different. My favorite was the deserts, miam miam! With the choice of restaurants and snack bars around the resort properties it was never hard to find a snack or sit down to a nice meal.

Being a solo-traveler was nice because I could really just go with the flow and do how much or how little I wanted during the day. I paid for the wifi in the room and when it rained I watched Netflix and just munched on snacks and lounged in the warmth of the tropical weather. My daily walks took me to see the beach cats at the far end of the beach. Watching the big cruise ships come and go from Amber Cove was a thrill and the sheltered beach area of Amber Cove was my favorite quiet beach spot where I could swim and watch for hummingbirds without the activities that were ingoing around the main resort pools and beaches.

The rocky ledges around the resort were a great place to sit and enjoy a coffee and watch the boats and birds.

Having two weeks to enjoy the surroundings was perfect. I had a few rainy days but since I had two weeks there it didn’t affect my overall experience too much. I had a big umbrella and enjoyed the warm rains so actually found it nice and it was quiet around the pool and on the beach during the rain!

The visit to Ocean World was a highlight, I spent the whole day. Ocean World is a bit like a theme park but revolves around dolphins, sharks, sea lions, and other sea creatures and birds. There was a swimming tank I swam in to snorkel in the coral reefs and the dolphin shows were amazing! The creatures all were well respected by the handlers and I had a perfect day.

The leaping dolphins at the Ocean World show in the Dominican Republic was one of the highlights of my trip.

The two weeks went by fast even though I spent some days just lazing about on walks and watching birds and playing games. There was always something to do if you wanted and always nothing to do if you wanted! I will certainly go back again…I’m not sure when or how but I think I will be back to the Dominican Republic sooner than later. I want to see my friend Taffy the beach cat after all!
